She said the road has considerable moral and symbolic values, inspiring a spirit of confidence, progress and hope.
Governor Aminata Siffaye Hydara made these remarks during the inauguration of the newly constructed 26km road linking the West Coast Region (WCR) commercial town of Brikama and the satellite villages of Marakissa, Dimbaya and Darsilami in Kombo Central District last Friday, commissioned by the vice president and Women’s Affairs minister.
That colorful ceremony formed part of the ongoing series of project inaugurations as part of the activities marking the 20th anniversary of the 22nd July Revolution, which also saw the opening of a 25m-foot bridge between Marakissa and Busura, financed by the Office of the President at the tune of D1.7M.
She further hinted that the road and the bridge will further join the peoples of her region and their neighbors, multiply the fruits of their labour, bring closer collaboration as well as stability and prosperity to all.
“As we celebrate this achievement that these projects bring with them, it is therefore, my hope and desire that what is carried across them in which ever direction is done for creating happiness, health and prosperity for social and economic development,” she remarked.
Highlighting other significant benefits of the projects, she added it would also facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce from the farms to other parts of the country and nearby storage facilities. “Productivity of the farming community will also be improved,” she said.
She used the opportunity to thank the president profoundly for making a strong commitment to personally finance the construction of the Marakisa-Busura Bridge and for remaining steadfast in delivering his promise on the Brikama-Marakisa-Dimbaya-Darsilami road project.
She also thanked the minister of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, engineers, and the management of the National Roads Authority (NRA) for their commitment towards ensuring the success of the project. She also thanked Foreign Affairs Minister Bala Garba Jahumpa for his constant patrol to the site while serving as minister of Transport, Works and Infrastructure.

« prev1 of 2next »Monday, October 20, 2014The newly constructed 26km road linking the West Coast Region (WCR) commercial town of Brikama and the satellite villages of Marakissa, Dimbaya and Darsilami in Kombo Central District was on Friday commissioned by the vice president and Women’s Affairs minister.
Meanwhile, a 25m-foot bridge between Marakissa and Busura, financed by the Office of the President at the tune of D1.7M, was also opened.
The events were part of the ongoing series of project inaugurations as part of the activities marking the 20th anniversary of the 22nd July Revolution.
In her inaugural statement on behalf of The Gambian leader, Vice President Njie-Saidy said the two developments underline the significant progress that the government made during the previous years aimed at providing critical infrastructure throughout the country to unleash the potentials of the rural sector in the context of national policy of promoting broad-based economic and social development in the country.
“Therefore in this connection, the construction of this road is part of my government’s plan to connect all major growth centres within this country with a fist class road network, thereby opening all parts of the country to business and investment opportunities, especially horticultural production as well as access to vital health, education, and other social services among many others,” she noted.
The country’s no.2 thanked the consultant, contractor, and the financers of the project for the success of the project. She added that the project has for long been a priority for the government, while returning gratitude to Allah for witnessing the completion of the project. “It is also gratifying to note that this project unlike some other road projects implemented in the past has been completed on time with no extra cost,” she happily reported.
VP Njie-Saidy said the new road will no doubt improve access to market and other public facilities as well as increase opportunities for small businesses. “This is the real meaning of development and my government will remain committed to continue with effort to make vital public utilities accessible and affordable to all Gambians,” she assured.
On the bridge project, the veep said the intervention came after a pledge made by The Gambian leader to address their plight. She expressed hope that the new bridge will be a source of inspiration to foster unity and harmony among the various communities.
She thanked the contractor, Alhagie Jallow, for having employed local skills in executing the project.
Speaking earlier, the minister of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, Ousman Badjie, reported that from 1994 to date, the July 22nd Revolution has constructed more than 20 major roads, many feeder roads, and bridges across the country.
The minister spoke of the critical connection between development and the right infrastructure, and opined that for any country to realise economic advancement, the transport chain must first develop so as to stimulate other sectors to develop in orderly manner.
“Road transport is regarded as an important factor in agricultural development; it is one of the means by which agricultural produce in farms are transported to different homes and markets,” he underscored.
He said roads create markets for agricultural produce; enhance interaction among geographical and economical regions; enhance mobility by facilitating the access to basic services and help increase their income generating capacity. “The provision of highly standard road network to facilitate the free movement of people and goods is a key prerequisite to socio-economic development,” he added.
He thanked the Saudi Fund for Development for funding the project; as well as the consultant, contractor, the team from his Ministry and the National Roads Authority (NRA) for a good work.
The director general of the Technical Department of the Saudi Fund for Development, Hassan Alattas, congratulated The Gambian leader and the people of The Gambia on the 20th anniversary of the 22nd July Revolution. He hastened to extol the existing cordial relations between the government and peoples of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and The Gambia.
“I am pleased to have come to the Republic of The Gambia and join you today on the happy occasion of the inauguration of the Brikama-Darsilami Road project and to congratulate you on the successful completion of the project, which costs around US$15M. It is as a result of the excellent cooperation between the government of The Gambia and the Saudi Fund for Development and Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA). The total commitment of the Saudi Fund to the Republic of The Gambia is about US$252M,” he disclosed.
Alattas said the Fund has financed projects in many sectors including airports, road and other infrastructure projects. He said the Saudi Fund for Development with other Arab donors are working to financing a new project, which is the road connecting Laminkoto and Passamas.
“The Saudi Fund for Development is conscious of the need and problem of development in most of the African countries. We the people of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia greatly admire the tremendous and concerted efforts by the government of The Gambia to build a strong and integrated economy to achieve the fulfillment of the aspiration of the friendly people of The Gambia. Hence, Saudi Arabia is keen to continue its cooperation with The Gambia and to do what it can do to assist in the implementation of development projects in various sectors of The Gambia’s economy,” he assured.
The consultant, Mahmoud Ben Salah of Pan-Arab Consultant Engineers (PACE), for his part, said the inauguration of the road marked yet another milestone in The Gambia government’s quest to providing high quality road networks to the population under the “visionary leadership” of President Jammeh. Salah said PACE was honoured to be contracted to supervise the construction of the new road, which he described as a crucial link of The Gambian secondary road network.
“PACE is a quite disciplined and organised institution with a reputation for providing efficient, effective, and professional services to a wider public and private sector clients. For over forty years, PACE has provided comprehensive professional services in planning, designing, and contracting supervision for numerous prestigious projects including highways and transportation projects for public and private sectors,” he told the gathering.
He concluded by thanking the Ministry of Works and NRA for their collaboration in ensuring the completion of the work on time and within budget.
The managing director of Arezki Construction Company, Ziad Arezki, said his company was very honoured to be associated with the infrastructural development of the country under the leadership of President Jammeh; a man he described as a “Pan-africanist and development-oriented”.

“The people of my region and indeed the greater number of Gambians are proud of The Gambian leader because he has always showed unalloyed love, patriotic, and nationalistic attribute for the development of the country,” she said.
